Synopsis:  After buttoned-up English manservant Marmaduke Ruggles (Charles Laughton) is lost by his aristocratic employer in a poker game to an uncouth American cattle baron, Ruggles's life is turned upside down as he is taken to Washington State to help his new master better his manners and raise his social standing. But the frontier can change a man dramatically, and Ruggles finds himself in adventures he never imagined--and never dreamed he'd enjoy so well. The supporting cast of Mary Boland and Charlie Ruggles as the new American employers and ZaSu Pitts playing an attractive widow is generous with the laughs, while director Leo McCarey's brilliant comic touch and Charles Laughton's turn as an Englishman stranded in a sea of barbaric Americans create a sidesplitting masterpiece.

劇情介紹: 這是由查理斯勞頓主演的最上乘的喜劇電影，以本片之題材拍成之電影並不多見。本片既揶揄了英國保守拘謹的階級意識，另方面也對美國早期粗魯不文的文化加以嘲諷。片中勞頓背林肯總統有名的蓋次堡演說稿那段尤屬經典。1918年艾沙納(Essanay)首次將威爾森(Wilson)1915年的一部小說拍成無聲電影，由泰勒·霍默斯(Taylor Holmes)主演。後派拉蒙將版權買下，於1923年重拍，由年輕的愛德華·埃佛裏斯·霍頓(Edward Everest Horton)出任男主角。本片由查理斯·勞頓主演。勞頓的另一部電影《叛艦喋血記》獲得奧斯卡最佳影片（本片也獲得奧斯卡提名）。觀眾可以看到不同的勞頓，欣賞他一流的演技。早在《亨利八世》中勞頓就證明了自己的實力，但沒人相信他除了扮那些輕浮的人外，還可以演有趣的角色。他在其他電影裏有時收斂，有時誇張，根據不同的劇情做出適當的調整。許多性格演員參與了這部電影，他們工作都很認真，沒有人偷懶。他們的表演自然大方，觀看他們的表演實在是一種享受。這部長達80分鐘的電影能讓觀眾捧腹大笑。最後一個鏡頭是勞頓站在那裏背誦林肯總統的《蓋茲堡宣言》。雖然此情節有點老套，但勞頓優美的朗誦贏得了觀眾的喜愛。這部影片在1950 年重拍成FANCY PANTS，鮑伯·霍普(Bob Hope)主演,但只是拙劣的模仿本片。《紅谷英僕》是一部真正意義的喜劇，重拍也難以超越，因為不是所有的性格演員都能重聚在一起。這部影片還是導演李奧·麥凱萊最好的 作品之一。
